The Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School, located in Wakefield MA, and also known as “Northeast Metro Tech” (NEMT), is a grades 9-12 comprehensive vocational and technical high school that provides academic and vocational programs for approximately 1,250 students from twelve surrounding communities: Chelsea, Malden, Melrose, North Reading, Reading, Revere, Saugus, Stoneham, Wakefield, Winchester, Winthrop and Woburn.
In March 2022, the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) and the District executed a Project Funding Agreement (PFA) authorizing approval of a new ~$317.4 million school set within the wooded hillside within the District’s property. The new ~386,000 SF school will be designed for Grades 9-12 and offer 21st century learning opportunities to an expanded enrollment of 1,600 students.
The planned construction involves multiple phases. Tree/site clearing and blasting will allow for construction of the new school and driveway to begin. Once site enabling work is complete, the building foundations and superstructure can start in early 2024. The target completion for construction of the new school is spring 2026. Once construction of the new building is complete, the existing school will be demolished to allow for sit improvements and landscaping including playing fields, tennis/basketball courts, parking, etc. Project completion is anticipated in summer 2027. Please note this schedule reflects a delay due to Conservation Commission approvals. Construction was originally scheduled to commence in Early 2023. Construction in non-jurisdictional areas commenced in August 2023. Dates above are draft and subject to change as work in jurisdictional areas can not commence until a Superseding Order of Conditions is issued by the MA Department of Environmental Protection.
